Domestic Assemblies and the Assumption Parish Census
The following is a list of the names of enslaved individuals and their enslavers, compiled from Domestic Assemblies and the Assumption Parish Census in the St. Mary's of the Barrens collection. In 1839 and 1846, the priests of St. Mary's of the Barrens documented the households within the parish, recording both free and enslaved members. The names listed below present a snapshot of Perry County, Missouri, in those years. Many of the enslavers appear in the financial records of St. Mary's of the Barrens, and some of the people they enslaved may have been hired by the Seminary, as, in many cases, enslaved individuals hired by the Seminary were entered into financial records with reference only to their enslaver's name. While official government census records of the time typically included only the sex and age of each enslaved person, the parish census preserved not only names and ages but also kinship relationships.*
Enslaved individuals are listed first in the order in which they are recorded in the census. However, for genealogical purposes, the list is sorted by the enslaver's surname.
